Why use a toner?
Toners serve several purposes. Firstly, they remove the last traces of your cleanser. This can be especially useful when using oil-based cleansers, which can leave a thin film of oil on your face. Secondly, it is common to cleanse your skin with hot water, a hot cloth, or in a hot environment, which opens the pores. Using a toner closes the pores, which helps to prevent blocked pores from occurring. Thirdly, using a toner can help to restore the pH balance of the skin. Our skin is naturally acidic, normally with a pH balance of between five and six. After cleansing, due to the alkaline nature of soap and many cleansers, the pH balance of skin gets disturbed. When this happens your skin has to restore the pH, and using a toner helps to restore this balance quickly. The old adage 'cleanse, tone, moisturise' as the best skin routine is still true today. For some reason, possibly because of our busy lives, the 'tone' bit of this routine has slightly fallen out of fashion, but for the reasons cited here, we think it's a step worth remembering!
How should I apply a toner?
For best results, use after cleansing to thoroughly remove any last traces of cleanser and prepare your skin to receive your chosen moisturiser. Either close your eyes, spritz on and remove with an organic cotton wool pad or, if you prefer, spray the toner directly onto a cotton pad and gently wipe over face, neck and decolletage.
